Millions of people throughout the world will be celebrating this year’s International Day of People with Disability on 3rd December, and Hume Employment Service will be joining celebrations with a Decorate a Cake Race! Hume Employment Service delivers employment programs to people who face a range of barriers to employment, including disabilities. Hume Employment Service is facilitating a 'Scavenger Hunt' in Merriwa Park where a number of their Jobseekers will be given clues to find decals and piping bags full of icing to decorate their mini mud cakes. The day is designed to encourage team building and social inclusion and is bound to create some friendly competition between Jobseekers. The day will finish off with a good old Aussie BBQ. To Nicole Hawkins, Disability Employment Service Contract Manager at Hume Employment Service, the day is not only an opportunity to celebrate the ability of people with disability, but importantly, a way to increase awareness of disability issues in the community and to break down stereotypes. “One of the biggest barriers that people with disability face is the attitude of other people. Getting involved in International Day of People with Disability is a chance to challenge myths, improve awareness and take positive action to change attitudes. Small changes can sometimes make a big difference on the ground. The Day is an opportunity to break down these barriers and challenge people’s perceptions of disability,” said Nicole. “Disability does not mean inability, and by publicly celebrating International Day of People with Disability, Hume Employment Service are making a positive statement about the abilities of the almost one in five Australians who live with disabilities”, continued Nicole.
